A brush fire that rapidly spread destroyed a single-family home on Harmony Farm Place in La Plata, the Maryland State Fire Marshal announced on Monday, Nov. 28.

The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, officials say, when the homeowner noticed the blaze burning outside.

Officials say that the fire was a result of burning brush, which became out of control and destroyed the home, as well as a 2000 Chevrolet Colorado pick-up truck that was parked outside the residence.

It took approximately 75 firefighters from the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department to get the flames under control, though crews remained at the scene for hours to help clear the scene and ensure no hot spots flared up.

No injuries were reported, though the accidental fire caused an estimated $350,000 in damages to the structure and the contents of the home. The displaced homeowner is being assisted by friends and family, according to the fire marshal.
